Happy New Year! Update 1/1/20

Inn on Piseco Lake

This week’s cover photo is a bit better than what I showed last week, eh? πŸ™‚

Monday into Monday night brought 2 inches of snow/sleet mash to cover things white again to the point where locals are swirling around the Indian Lake town trails again. Whether or not you want to ride them would be up to you. Not much better than beater riding…

Then I picked up another 3 inches of snow last night from lake-effect activity. So I would say that Moose River Plains managed at least several inches of snow from that, and it continues to snow today.

So, Moose River Plains back to life. Just park your truck and trailer at Brown’s Farm near the end of Cedar River Road, pay the $5/sled and take the points.

You can probably ride into Perkins Clearing from the south end, but you’ll be limited as to what you can do in there with all of the logging at the north end this winter.

I heard that Powley Road has been re-opened for snowmobiling:

Wherever you go, be wary of ice and snow laden trees hanging down onto the trails or even broken in two. Milder weather on Friday should knock much of the snow and ice off the trees, which wouldn’t be a bad thing in and of itself. Unfortunately, it will also rain on Friday, which will NOT help the trail conditions. Still some question as to when rain would change over to snow on Saturday.

A word about lakes

Yes, people are riding the smaller lakes like Adirondack Lake. Even heard reports of riders on Lake Pleasant. Keep in mind that even if someone reports 6 or 8 inches of ice, that report is only for the specific location where the hole was drilled through the ice. It hasn’t been significantly cold for weeks and ice thickness is well below normal for this time of year.

If your “little voice” is telling you to stay off the lakes, obey that call. If you are not on the ice, your chances of breaking through that ice remains at 0%.

Bottom line:

If you’re OK with somewhat limited riding, we’ve got that for you. We were in similar straits going into the New Year last winter, but ended up doing pretty well for ourselves.

If you want to throw in the towel aready, go ahead and sell your sled. That’ll just leave more riding for the rest of us who play the long game. πŸ˜‰

I’m hoping to get sprung loose for my first ride of the season. So, be looking for a report from me soon.

For the ilsnow nation,

Darrin
