You’re not kidding about the bare pavement riding, ouch! Shelving the snowbank would make for a much better passage.
And…our trails are getting more pressure (even midweek) because it’s one of the few places to actually ride for more than a week or two all winter over the past several years.

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterNot enough for me to try it, lol!

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterQUOTE: Yes, it seems the number of weekend reckless/high/drunk riders has been getting worse. I’d love to say I won’t ride on weekends, but for me as an out of state rider working full time if I didn’t ride weekends I wouldn’t ride at all. I usually try to ride where I think the crowds won’t be. Most of the time I avoid problem riders this way, but it seems once or twice a year I get run off the side of the trail to avoid someone coming at me on my side out of control.
In a few years I will retire and, if we still have winters with snow, and I’m still physically able to ride, I will become a weekday only rider.
UNQUOTEI hope you’re able to become a midweek rider. Would be a total game changer for you!

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterAt least there’s a bypass. Otherwise, that would have been a disaster. Imagine the amount of traffic that Fawn Lake trail, Willis Mountain trail and Fall Lake trail would have absorbed. That would have been a torture chamber, lol!
Sometimes, I do miss the days when snowmobile trails didn’t get shut off.

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterMy latest ride into Perkins was April 21, 2007. Didn’t have much snow all winter until Valentine’s Day storm, then we had several snowstorms March into mid-April.
Also rode from Indian Lake out to Lake Durant that day after I got done with Perkins. Didn’t ride the lakes though. I trailered to Perkins, then back to town.
With the obstructionists on the warpath over the past couple of decades, I’m honestly surprised we have any snowmobiling available to us in the Adirondacks. At age 50, I’ve got fewer rides ahead of me than behind me. At this point, I can only enjoy what we have for as long as I can.
Once the obstructionists get their way and all our snowmobile trails are no better than foot trails, I’m outta here….

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterThanks for your reports Ron. Always appreciate your updates on Panther Mountain Stream and Evergreen Lake.

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterI showed pictures of the worst stuff, so I wouldn’t give people the idea conditions were better than they actually were.
Most of what I rolled over was reasonably white.
My sled didn’t come close to overheating and the slides were wet and happy when I got back to the truck.
As for Moose River Plains, I suppose your friends could drop the sleds off at the trailhead about a mile past Browns, then park at Browns.
But geesh… Are your friends really that hard up to ride Moose River Plains on what’s sure to be marginal conditions at best? Not even a heavy dusting of new snow either to at least make it look nice.

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterLong Lake has open water north of the Route 30 bridge all the way across the lake, cutting across where the snowmobile drag strip usually is by mid-winter.
I’m not in any hurry to ride lakes.

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterGood to hear from you Joe!
Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterDid that tonight…

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterI drove through Morehouse yesterday and was SHOCKED at how little snow there was, even there. Large swaths of bare ground…
Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterI’m glad I helped you this year.
We all hope for better next winter, every time!

Darrin @ ilsnow.comKeymasterI try to get my kicks in riding, lol!
With shortening snowmobiling seasons, my strategy is to work less during winter so I can have more ride days. Much easier to pull off financially now with an empty household.
At some point, the cost of snowmobiling will become too high and winters too short to justify my continued expenditures in this pastime.
Then I’ll pack up my bags and move to somewhere with nice weather 24/7/365. Probably Arizona or Southern Cal.
