ParticipantLast Sat and Sun (1/18 and 1/19) I did a little exploring. Short story is the Tree Farm and Perkins Clearing were good riding and lakes were nice. Getting there was tough as woods trails are thin and bumpy. Not enough snow on woods trails for the groomers to do much, so I think until we get some decent snow they won’t get better. Logging in both the Tree Farm and Perkins, so not all trails are open and the bypass trails are rough.
The river trail had muddy spots – someone was stuck in a mudhole so once I found they did not need my help I turned around and took the trail behind the welcome to Speculator sign and down rt 30 to get to the tree farm that way. Took Fawn Lake trail out to Perkins and that was very rough riding.
I would not travel from far away expecting good riding, but if you are reasonably local or could trailer to the north end of Perkins or near the Tree Farm you could do some decent riding.

ParticipantThanks 500ss
We dont plan on going this way as we know there is more snow and the trails thru Morehouse as always are the best. The west end of Piseco always gets more lake effect than the Spec area.

ParticipantThe new trail using Fawn Lake Road to get from Sacandaga to Oxbow really sucks. Totally enjoy riding the edge of the road for a half-mile. Three cheers for the knuckle draggers that caused the property owners to shut down the original trail off of Higgins Bay.

ParticipantIf any locals are out today I would appreciate a report on trail conditions and lake conditions. I’m sure there will be riding to be found this weekend but wondering how bad lakes are likely to be. Looks like it is going to get colder, so maybe with scratchers deployed lakes can be managed…

ParticipantI just looked at the web cams for OxBow, Indian and Piseco Lakes. They all look very wet with standing water on them. Probably OK now for lube and cooling but with the cool down coming and blowing snow I visualize patches of bare ice, no lube or cooling. Have to wait and see if the snow sticks before the wind blows it off.

ParticipantTree farm trails held together well this weekend – they must have groomed after the rain and everything firmed up fairly flat. Got 3 or 4 inches Friday night that was a real plus. Unfortunately, everything west of Sacandaga was another story. Brutal – fawn lake, outhouse toward piseco, cemetary trail – all whipped hard by Sunday morning. Didn’t look like any more grooming going on out there – at least not over the weekend. Ran into two groups that had been headed west toward oxbow that were turning their sleds around and going back toward Speculator. Tons of snow – no rocks sticking through on the trails. Just rough as hell. Powley was nice but not worth the price of getting there unless you’re trailering to the Rt 10 parking lot.

ParticipantLooks like I am done for the season. I don’t have a trailer so I need to cross lakes and some backwoods trails to get to good riding. Years ago I would do it, but I don’t like beating up myself or my sleds anymore. As E. Emil says “not worth the price of getting there”.
I long for the real winters we had when I started riding the area 25 years ago, but this winter was a lot better than last winter where I didn’t even start my sleds. Makes you realize that you need to find a way to capitalize on conditions when they are good because you can’t count on the good times to last. Two weeks ago when conditions were great it felt like we had a few more weeks left in the season.
I sure can’t financially justify this sport, but I still love it so I will hang in there for a while longer…
