As a father, there’s nothing more rewarding than sharing my snowmobiling experiences with Darrin Jr. Now, part of that is him on rides with my life-long friends.
Junior never had the experience of riding with Crazy Cal before, with all its inherent entertainment value.
You never know Cal is going to say or do. It usually comes out of nowhere.
This was going to be a day!
Heading out
Plan was for Darrin Jr and I to meet up at Cal’s house by 9am. Encountered a fresh groom on C8 main drag leaving the compound to meet up.
SWEET!

C8/Sabael trail was a good ride onto Indian Lake. Didn’t take 4 miles before Cal was reaching into his bag of toys.

Most of Indian Lake was a good-n-fast rip, but south bay became bumpy to the boat launch. Campsite trail had some bumps, but not yet terrible. Swift run across Lewey Lake.
C8 / Two Miles of Hell was a good ride from Wednesday’s groom.
Perkins Clearing was MINT to the back!

C4/C8 Big Brook trail was pretty good when we passed through in the morning.
Had a nice ride on C4/C8 Willis Mountain trail to Piseco Lake.

Fast rip across Piseco Lake. Trail from Piseco Lake to Powley Road was good to excellent riding.
Powley Road was like riding a cloud!

C8A/C4A from end of Powley Road was lumpy-n-bumpy into Stratford. Saw a result of stupidity on Dugway Road.

Thankfully, next 8 miles of C4A to Salisbury Clubhouse were good to excellent riding.

Lunchtime
The crew was getting hungry and I could smell another Ohio Tavern run!
C4 leaving Salisbury Clubhouse through Military Road had soft studder in places, but was fun riding.
C4 through Norway was BRUTALLY BUMPY AND ROUGH with humpback moguls. AWFUL!
Thankfully, C4 improved to good riding approaching Ohio, especially after crossing NY-8 highway.
C4G was nice riding to Herk 29 intersection. Picked up a fresh groom on C4B and followed the ribbon to Ohio Tavern for lunch.
Had the Smokehouse Burger on Sunday’s ride. Ordered it again this time. AWESOME!

Back to Indian Lake
C4B through C4/Jones Road leaving Ohio was PERFECT!

C4/C4A through Morehouse was a disco roller-ama with some studderbumps thrown in. Yet, it was tame enough to permit a marginally enjoyable ride. Got to Evergreen Lake happy to rip that across.
Evergreen Lake to Piseco Lake trail was pretty good and led to a fast rip across Piseco Lake.
Piseco Lake to Oxbow Lake trail and Oxbow/Fish Mountain trail were good to occasionally excellent riding. Oxbow Lake in between was another fast rip.
Fawn Lake Road was getting bare from February sun. Just enough brown snow along the margins to slither by.
C4/Fawn Lake trail was EXCELLENT!
Big Brook trail has gotten bumpy in places from the day’s traffic.
Took a breather as we got into Perkins Clearing before making the final press back to ilsnow Capital City, Indian Lake.

As daylight faded, evening chill came on QUICKLY! It was time to get home.
On our return trip, 2 Miles From Hell had gotten studder bumps in places, especially toward Lewey Lake end. But it got us through just fine.
Got back to Indian Lake in the dark. Main artery trails had shredder bumps in places, but still comfortable riding.
After parting ways with Cal and Darrin Jr, I banged out the customary Victory Lap and found a fresh groom on S87 / 42nd and Broadway to cap off a great day!

Strolled back to the compound with 172 miles for the ride. Great day at the office!

Bottom line
AWESOME DAY! Took some lumps for a few stretches, but most trails were great riding. Couldn’t ask for a better way to spend a sunny winter day.
And Darrin Jr got some of the Crazy Cal experience. The first of many more!
For the ilsnow nation,
Darrin
