Great to see Village Motorsports‘ rental snowmobile fleet covered in snow Wednesday morning. Looks more alive here, wouldn’t you say?
I ended up 4-and-a-half inches of new snow at the ilsnow storm center in Indian Lake, NY.
If you don’t think that’s a good day at the office, take that 4.5 inches and multiply it by 30 days. The 135 inch total would be more snow in a month than I typically get at my location in an entire snow season.
So… Yes, we had a good day at the office! All about perspective.
Considering we had a 50*F thaw and rain last Friday, snowpack now in the central Adirondacks isn’t bad.

Best places to ride
With early season conditions, seasonal road snowmobiles are the places to hit.
- Perkins Clearing
- Speculator Tree Farm
- Powley Road
- O’Neil Flow Road/Newcomb trail
- Moose River Plains from Brown’s farm parking lot at 1517 Cedar River Road, Indian Lake ($10/sled at lot)
I’ll go over logging closures for Perkins Clearing and Speculator Tree Farm again:
Perkins Clearing
- Southern Perkins Clearing Road into Mud Lake Road (use Southern bypass to/from Route 30 road crossing)
Speculator Tree Farm
- Fly Creek Road and Long Level Road (Part of S41D)
- Old Route 30 (Part of C4) between Cave Hill Road and Fly Creek Road intersections (use Old Route 30 bypass)
- Gilmantown trail (C4B)
Passable, but…
We need more snow for narrow, woodsy connector trails to become enjoyable riding. But the needle has moved in the right direction. Grooming these trails will be done on a limited case-by-case basis for now. At best, these trails are passable. At worst, you would encounter bumpy-n-rough riding with early season hazards, including muck holes.
Lakes?
Sorry bro… I continue to invoke my rights under the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution on the grounds that anything I say can and shall be used against me.
Weekend Outlook
Maximizing seasonal road snowmobile trail riding and minimizing narrow, woodsy trail riding will be your best key to success over the weekend.
Friday night’s weather system probably won’t be a world beater. But as long as we get some snow and not rain, I’m ALL GOOD.
Merry Christmas!
For the ilsnow nation,
Darrin
