GRADUAL Improvement this week

Tuesday 1/14/2025 UPDATE: Snow fairies delivered 2-3 inches of snow in town Monday night. Over a half-foot of new snow into Moose River Plains. Hopefully, that’s enough to summon the groomers to work some magic on the narrow woods connector trails this week.

Maybe a real snowmobiling weekend here at ilsnow Capital City coming up? Dare to dream!

Monday report

We continue to get snow in dribs and drabs here in ilsnow land. Snow cover around Indian Lake, NY ranges from less than a half-foot in thin areas up to 6-12 inches. Moose River Plains holds a foot or more of snowpack.

By far, your best riding this week will happen on seasonal road networks such as Moose River Plains, Perkins Clearing (from Mason Lake parking area), Speculator Tree Farm, C8A/Old 538 Newcomb trail and Powley Road. I’m assuming that grooming crews will work their magic this week to restore trails from weekend carnage.

Narrow woods connector trails are rough, lacking sufficient trail base depth to fully cover rocks and roots. Local trails around Indian Lake looked rather thin and rough from the roadside Monday morning. Grooming on these trails would be on a case-by-case basis this week.

Snowmobilers have been riding lakes. I offer NO warrantee on ice thickness and leave it up to the individual to decide on whether reward is worth the risk.

Anything BIG coming?

So far, January has been consistently, but not extremely, cold. In fact, I have yet to register a sub-zero morning in January 2025 here in Indian Lake.

There have been headline making lake-effect snow events in places for Upstate New York. But we’ve been remarkably devoid of widespread significant snow makers, especially here in the central Adirondacks.

A lobe of the Polar Vortex (PV) is expected to break loose and settle into southern Canada during the holiday weekend. Depending on how much shortwave energy can rotate around the base of the Polar Vortex, an opportunity may open around MLK Jr. Day. At this point, it’s just something to watch.

Pick-n-choose, find a place to ride!

For the ilsnow nation,

Darrin
