Monday evening Moose River Plains run

Wilder Performance

6pm Tuesday update: We picked up about a half-foot of new snow today! Somewhat more than I had anticipated from yesterday’s forecast. Every once in a while, we can get the shooter’s roll. πŸ™‚

I sat on the pine waiting for the holiday weekend crowds to leave. Still didn’t know whether I’d bother snowmobiling on Monday, until Damion told me that he’d be up to Indian Lake for a ride after work.

That got me out of the house for an old school Moose River Plains dinner run to Inlet, even if the snowmobiling would be picking at weekend leftovers.

Taking off

I met up with Damion and his daughter at Brown’s Farm parking lot shortly after 4pm. It was a chilly start with temperature around 15*F. We were ready to ride!

Brown’s Farm to the end of Cedar River Road had sufficient snow coverage, about as good as you could hope for in fair weather. The 4 miles leading to Cedar River Headquarters was nice riding, ranging from smooth to slight studder-ripple.

Enter Moose River Plains

Cedar River Headquarters to Silver Run was somewhat tattered from the weekend, ranging from studder-ripple to low roller bumps throughout. Wasn’t the best, wasn’t the worst.

Silver Run to Big-T flats was a noticeable improvement, with only slight studder-ripple throughout.

Almost no carbide scratch up to this point.

My friends were having fun, chilling out at Big-T flats.

Approaching Inlet

Big-T flats enroute to Inlet ranged from studder-ripple to occasional low roller bumps. The corners had some carbide scratch, but there was sufficient trail base throughout.

Limekiln Road had shelved snowbanks and good snow coverage on the road.

Behind Ole Barn to Gilbert Road was by far the worst riding of the evening: studder-choppy and bumpy with a few potato-sized rocks floating around.

Dinner

Ole Barn: CLOSED

Screamen Eagle: CLOSED

Tony Harper’s Pizza and Clam Shack got the call for dinner. I hadn’t eaten there before – so I was game to try something new.

On the left was poutine fries for appetizer. On the right was my dinner (the Mountain Maniac) which included a nice combination of grilled chicken filet with bacon, ham, cheddar cheese and honey mustard. Good eats! Also had a coffee to warm me up.

The way back

Not much different than the ride out. It got steeply colder by the minute. The temperature had dropped to near zero by the time we got back to the trucks around 8pm.

A little cold to take pictures every 5 minutes, but I did snap this one from Big-T flats on the way home. Not bad, eh?

Ended up with an easy 59 mile Monday evening ride with friends after the crowds had left. Definitely glad I took the stroll. Pretty good for a vulture ride.

Midweek Outlook

We will major in cold this week – and especially by the weekend! No big snows expected for the central Adirondacks, but enough to add to the pile and keep it fresh.

Stick to the seasonal road trails like Moose River Plains, Perkins Clearing and Powley Road for most snowmobiling fun. Trail conditions will improve as groomers make their mid-week runs.

Local/woods trails are swampy in many places. This snowmobile succumbed to a muddy quagmire on the Sabael trail during the weekend.

Hopefully, cold weather and sparse midweek snowmobiling traffic will allow mudholes such as these to freeze over. But they’ll be rough riding for a while longer. Pretty tough to groom that.

I’ve got some riding to do this week!
