Trying to look like winter

Wilder Performance

After Thursday, no seasonably cold weather is expected again until at least Tuesday next week. Forecast for Sunday night into Monday looks especially grim at www.ilsnow.com/weather

Monday’s Report:

Last weekend was a gut punch. But Sunday night into Monday morning delivered 4-6 inches of heavy, wet snow for Indian Lake, NY and central Adirondacks in most places. Locations above 2000-foot elevation got a half-foot or somewhat better.

As seasonal chill tightens up the new snow this week, you should be able to ride into Moose River Plains from Brown’s Farm parking lot at the end of Cedar River Road. Although DEC had closed the gate at Cedar River Headquarters during the melt, the gate will likely be reopened this week. DEC has told me that it’s OK to ride around the gate until it reopens. Going through Inlet to Old Forge would be marginal at best, with their previous snow cover wiped out from the weekend thaw.

Note: Parking fee at Brown’s Farm parking lot is now $10/snowmobile, to cover rising costs in plowing and maintaining the lot.

From the last time I was told, Perkins Clearing Road will be plowed all the way through until Christmas. If you want to ride in from Mason Lake, I’d highly suggest obtaining local intel before making the trip.

Narrow woods trails are NO GO! Unless you want to play in the mud.

This report is brought to you by Mangino Chevrolet Buick GMC in Amsterdam, NY & Ballston Spa, NY. We know that you have high expectations, and as a car dealer we enjoy the challenge of meeting and exceeding those standards each and every time. Allow us to demonstrate our commitment to excellence! Our experienced sales staff is eager to share its knowledge and enthusiasm with you. We encourage you to browse our online inventory, schedule a test drive and investigate financing options.

Looking ahead

Seasonable cold will take hold through Thursday. But developing rapid zonal flow underneath the retreating Polar Vortex (PV) will scour out the cold by Friday.

A couple of shortwaves (SW) may generate our next meaningful precipitation event later Sunday into Monday. With marginal temperatures, we’re looking at either rain, or rain changing to wet snow.

For the following week? Not looking good for snow with staying power under a stunning lack of Arctic cold over North America.

It wouldn’t be impossible to score a marginal temperature snowfall and quick shot of stale Canadian chill. But the odds appear stacked against us for a while, especially with El Niño large and in charge.

One more thing

New this season – Weekly (7-Day) Town of Webb/Inlet Snowmobile Permits can be purchased online!!  Select which visitor center you want to pick them up at (Inlet or Old Forge) and they will be ready and activated when you arrive.  This is especially helpful for those entering the system from the Moose River Plains.
