Even better than Ferriss Bueller’s Day Off! Cal seized the opportunity for a mid-weeker. He wanted something easy and fun, which meant another road trip to Tupper Lake for Thursday. It’s the closest thing to an easy button that I know of.
I never mind going back for more when it comes to riding up north. We left Washington Street parking lot in Tupper Lake around 11am.
C7 to Charlies Inn was studdery with occasional high rollers mixed in. Pebbly/bare spots within the first 5 miles north of Tupper Lake had grown significantly since Wednesday’s ride. Some bare spots were nearing unavoidable.
We found out why the trail was bumped up. Was looking like Weekend Lite at Charlies Inn.
After chatting with a couple of friends for a while, we pressed on. With C7 fairly bumpy, I led us over to C7B which was AWESOME! Straight arrow sections and wide flats were a mind-blowing rush!
From there, we cut back to C7 via S83. Rolling past Loon Lake to C8/Meacham Lake exit ramp was quite studdery at times. Studders lightened up considerably approaching Mountain View.
Along the way, we rolled through the parallel trail to Sugarloaf, which was excellent riding and avoided a stretch of really thin conditions on C7.
Cal was liking his day off!
We rolled into Mountain View and had lunch at Jessie’s Supper Club. Both of us ordered the Jack Daniels burger with sweet potato fries, based on a recommendation from some Indian Lake friends that strolled through the day before. A steak knife holding the burger together was pretty cool. That meal hit the spot nicely! AMAZING sweet potato fries and a very tasty burger.
On to Malone
C7/Mountain View through Owls Head and a few miles after was a helmet-whipping booty call.
Wow, that was fun!
C7 past Titus Mountain exit ramp was getting really thin in places with bald spots growing more by the day. Not gonna last much longer without a good dump of snow.
We rolled into Roberts Motorsports so Cal could start on his accessory wish list for next winter. We had fun looking at snowmobiles on the showroom floor.
The way back
We retraced our steps. As a side jaunt, I led us through 8 miles of smiles on C8A/Wolf Pond Road. Riding got rough once C8A left Wolf Pond Road. But the scenic view up top was worth it, as always!
The stretch run on C7 from Charlie’s Inn to Tupper Lake was bumpy, but much softer than previously, which allowed for a near half-way decent run back to the truck. But pebbly and bald stretches within 5 miles of Tupper Lake grew considerably since late morning, with some bald spots becoming unavoidable. I don’t know when that will become completely skunky. But it may not hold up much longer without another dump of snow.
Rolled back to Washington Street Parking lot just after dark with 147 miles for the day. Cal said the ride was EXACTLY what he needed. Guess I did a good job in helping my life-long friend enjoy a snowmobiling day off. We sure had a ton of laughs!
Bottom line
Tick, tock! Time is running out… Get here and ride while we still got it!
Opportunity knocks for Monday into Tuesday with North American blocking pattern retreating to Greenland (NAO-) and a possible potent shortwave rolling through the Great Lakes. Last night’s EPS ensemble had a really tremendous look to it.
Hopefully, this snow opportunity will pan out. Otherwise, the snow we’ve got left will tire out under the March sun, even as temperatures are expected to remain at or below climatology for a while longer.
I’ll be back at it Friday, riding it out from the compound this time.
For the ilsnow nation,
Darrin
