Newcomb at Night

Wilder Performance

The Lost Boyz of Winter (Crazy Cal, Matty Ice and myself) got together for a dinner ride to Lake Harris Lodge in Newcomb.

We trailered to the Northville Lake Placid trailhead parking lot near Lake Durant. Figured that would eliminate the 8 miles of bump-n-grind on S84 from town to reach the prize.

It was just a snowshoe trail until Lake Durant Campsites. Looked PLENTLY like winter here.

After the highway crossing, the mile-long section of S84 until Newcomb/Old 538 trail had tons of snow, but was horribly bumpy. There were several creek crossings as well.

The Prize!

Newcomb/Old 538 trail was an easy trail report. Aside from dips on Joseph Mountain from old water bars, snowmobile riding looked like THIS nearly all the way through.

C8A over to Newcomb was bumpy in spots for the first 2 miles or so, with some water hazards. After that, much of it was nearly as good as Old 538 was. But near Goodnow Flow Road and a couple of other times after that, there were a few more water hazards.

The trail through Newcomb was groomed and facilitated a nice ride to Lake Harris Lodge, via the lake crossing.

Dinner was great but I forgot to take foodie pics. We were surprised by how busy it was at the lodge. It was certainly hopping for a weekday.

There was noticeably more snow in Newcomb than in Indian Lake. I’d say snowpack was a solid 12-18 inches up there. They’ve done very well in the snow department this week!

The way back

Same conditions, but in reverse. But the riding seemed even better because snow was coming down hard enough to coat over the tracks we made on the way up. It was cloud riding on Old 538.

One more picture to show the plethora of snow.

We returned to the trucks with an easy 52 miles and a belly full of food. Snowmobile riding with life-long friends, near perfect riding temperatures in the 20s and snow in the air made it magic.

Weekend Outlook

Lack of cold this winter has left us huge problems with mud-holes. For examples, here is one on C4 between Speculator Village and Perkins Clearing.

In some cases, trail crews may be working hard to make a trail passable before they can even roll a groomer through.

D.R.A.G. of Speculator has informed they will be grooming their trails on Friday to prep for the weekend. Haven’t seen any groomers rolling around Indian Lake, although I’m hopeful that’ll start on Friday as well. Newcomb has been grooming. It’s shaping up to be a mixed bag of tricks. At least we’re riding here, finally…
