I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas.
Lake-effect snow over the weekend was mostly confined to the northwestern Adirondacks, and likely to remain that way through Tuesday.
I would say the best bet for riding this week is Moose River Plains (MRP), with deeper snow pack and the best likelihood of some fresh snow to work with. Around Indian Lake (IL) hamlet, the remaining brick hard snow pack only has a scant dusting of fresh snow on top. Narrow woods trails likely have large water/mud holes.
Speculator (SPEC) is probably in a similar situation to Indian Lake, although Perkins Clearing likely has a little more fresh snow to work with.
New Year’s Outlook
I’d suggest getting your mid-week riding in, because Thursday afternoon will be the start of our ruin. GEFS ensembles showing the scorch-n-torch through the December 29 – January 3 timeframe:
Strong southeastern United States high and PNA- will do that every time…
This pattern guarantees storms will cut through the Great Lakes and leave us on the wrong side of the tracks. JUST HORRIBLE…
There are some indications this stranglehold will begin to weaken around the weekend of January 7-8. But much damage to our snow pack is likely by then. In recent years, the time around New Year’s has been quite unkind to us.
For the ilsnow nation,
Darrin
