We are into the 2021-22 snowmobiling season for the central Adirondacks, but don’t have much to show for it yet.
If the weather unfolds close to what I’m expecting for the next couple of weeks, it will be a while before we’re riding here.
Saturday’s New York Shootout in Inlet, NY behind the Ole Barn will happen, no matter the conditions. I’m happy to say that ilsnow.com is one of the sponsors of this year’s event.
UPDATE: New York Shootout has been moved to Sunday, December 12th. Gates open at 9am, racing to begin at 10am.
Snodeo hours in Old Forge can be found here.
Let’s begin from the here and now, then play it forward…
Starting snow cover
Snow cover is thin throughout ilsnow land, not enough for any snowmobile riding.
North America snow cover spread into the lower 48 states continues to lag in comparison to climatology, as seen in red.
Coming up
A weather system will bring minor snowfall to the Adirondacks on Wednesday, December 8th. This was the system I had decent hope for last week. But the developing coastal storm is now expected to track too far offshore for a direct hit here.
On top of that, we may pick up another bit of snow early Friday, December 10th.
The modest snow gains we make this week will get wiped out by anomalously mild air and rain on Snodeo Saturday. Temperatures may push past 50*F across the central Adirondacks in this regime. Think: Custer’s Last Stand.
A strong cold front will knock temperatures back down toward climatology on Sunday, December 12th with a touch of snow on the back end.
Looking ahead
Mid December is appearing to become a complete bust for snowmobiling. The forecast EPS mean temperature anomaly map for December 12-17, 2021 is about as bad as it can be. Notice the true Arctic cold continues to be anchored over Alaska.
Even the December 17-22, 2021 time frame appears grim, as per GEFS Ensembles.
At least you won’t miss much riding if your new snowmobile hasn’t made it to the dealer yet.
For the ilsnow nation,
Darrin
