Diehard: Report 3/12/20

Wilder Performance

UPDATE 3/23/20: Indian Lake picked up nearly 8 inches of snow in a hurry this afternoon. This would have been nice two weeks ago, before we lost the vast majority of our winter snow pack.

All state snowmobile associations have closed their trail systems in the Northeast and Canada either voluntarily or by Executive Order due to Coronavirus pandemic. So, this is lawn-jockey or private property stuff. Or poor man’s fertilizer. 😉

Report 3/12/20

The web-cams are showing a miserable picture as we push toward the point of no return.

It’s that “wonderful” time of year when I go through the motions with ilsnow.com, but yet feel compelled to finish up well because I never know who may be checking out my website for the first time. 😉

We continue in our slow-death mode for the Adirondack snowmobiling season with the remnant snow pack about 12-18 inches or less in most places:

I wouldn’t say the inner Indian Lake trails are impassable on snowmobile, but the riding surface is either ice, frozen crust, water or bare dirt.

The Crow Hill Road shelf is nearly gone:

I’ll spare you the picture of what S86 looks like leaving Crow Hill Road into town because it’s beyond grizzly – it’s BARE!

Weekend Outlook

With no meaningful snow in sight into next week, I’d say you’d have to hit the usual diehard hangouts like Speculator Tree Farm, Perkins Clearing or even 538/Newcomb trail if you want to attack that from the Northville/Lake Placid trailhead and worm your way back thru the Lake Durant Campsites. Moose River Plains would be another possibility, but the road from Brown’s Farm to the trail head is bare.

From the back side of Perkins Clearing, you may be able to surprise yourself if you try to hit the Big Brook trail toward the outhouse.

At your own risk, the lakes may offer some fast, flat and fun riding if you allow the mid-March sun be your friend and loosen up the frozen morning crust.

As for me, I believe I’m done for the season. Chasing one last die-hard ride on trails that I’ve ridden at will all winter doesn’t do it for me like it used to. But I guess I reserve to right to change my mind if the mood strikes. 😉

For the ilsnow nation,

Darrin
