As you can guess, we’ve got spring snowmobiling conditions in the Adirondacks. With many places still holding 2+ feet in the woods, I expect most trails to remain ride-able as we start the weekend and temperatures fall low enough to staunch the bleeding.
Indeed, I spotted several snowmobilers riding around Indian Lake on Friday.
Lakes have standing water on them, meaning they’ll be glare ice once they freeze back over this weekend. Of course, going on the lakes after the two-day thaw is very much at your own risk, especially near inlets, outlets and other traditional thinner-ice areas of any given lake.
Of course, any plowed roads are toast.
I would even venture to guess that the final couple of miles of Moose River Plains to the Limekiln Gate is shot given the thin snow cover on that section of trail all winter.
The southern 4 miles of 538/Newcomb which was plowed most of the winter may also be hurting as well, given its initial thin snow cover.
Weekend Outlook
If you want to ride this weekend and go into it with reasonable expectations, you’ll do OK. Just know that any riding on plowed roads and driveways is likely to be skanky or bare. Any snowmobile trail grooming would be done on a limited case-by-case basis. Although most of the trails maintain good coverage, there will be some bald spots as well.
Winter is almost done, so it’s up to you to decide what you want to do with it.
