Presidents Week Update: 2/18/19

Wilder Performance

Indian Lake picked up almost 4 inches of air-fluff snow on Monday, which brought back the nice mid-winter luster.

As you can see from the opening graphic, snow pack is 2 feet or greater throughout much of the south-central Adirondacks.

There were TONS of snowmobiles in town over the weekend and predictably, the trail conditions got rather rough in places. The volume of snowmobile traffic today was astoundingly high for a Monday.

I haven’t been out riding since Thursday, so I can’t give first hand specifics on which trails are good riding or lousy. There is a reason my sled stays in the tarmac on weekends, especially holiday weekends. πŸ˜‰

Midweek Outlook

As traffic subsides somewhat mid-week, the groomers can attempt to gain the upper hand – or at least draw even. There is plenty of material for the groomers to put Humpty-Dumpty together again, assuming no groomer breakdowns.

Assuming that Thursday’s brief mild spell doesn’t bring enough rain to spank us, we should end the week well enough.

Extended Outlook

We’ll probably have to negotiate some “hazards” to end February that may wipe out snowmobile riding in the lower elevation places surrounding the Adirondacks. But ilsnow land has enough in the bank to withstand a hit or two.

Then we emerge on the other side with a robust late-winter weather pattern setting up for the first week of March:

There is LOTS to like about this, including a strong Polar Vortex (PV) in position to drive arctic cold into the eastern United States, even some PNA+ ridging to establish a cross-polar link from Siberia.

Such a pattern could also be active and stormy as well. I know that some people are done with snowmobiling after Presidents Week. But the true blue riders know that March can offer some of the best snowmobiling of the season with a fraction of the crowds, especially if you can bang out a mid-weeker. πŸ˜‰
