Indian Lake to Newcomb: Update 1/25/17

Wilder Performance

Was about to take a snowmobile ride today. Upon checking the underside of my skis, I discovered the carbide from my right ski had sheared off from behind with some decent ski wear. Maybe my desperation Jerry Savarie Road ride last April with 4 inches of snow and no base wasn’t the right call. 😉

So I hopped in the car and did a fly trip to the Lemon Tree in Speculator for new carbides. Then after I got everything back to right, I set sail early afternoon.

I hadn’t been up to Newcomb in a while, so I gave that a shot. Indian Lake village trails were in the process of being groomed as I left town. Trail S84 toward Blue Mountain was a bit lumpy and bumpy with some studder, but not a terrible ride with a few water hazards to beware of.

It was certainly pretty as a postcard riding:

Trail S84

Trail 538/Newcomb was a tad bumpy and lumpy up to the Essex County Line. The Newcomb side was freshly groomed and a nice ride up to the T-intersection. Joseph Mountain had just a few water hazards.

Took a right onto Trail C8B and ran that over to Newcomb: all freshly groomed with a small handful of water hazards.

Ate a late lunch at the Newcomb House, then headed back to Indian Lake. The inner village trails were all freshly groomed by the time I got back.

Nothing big, just a low key ride for 72 miles.

There were lots of trees bent down and some broken from the weight of snow and ice. Sticks littered the trail in places. I was able to pull a number of small trees off the trail.

Weekend Outlook

At present, snow pack is a solid 12-18 inches around Indian Lake, increasing to around 2 feet in the snow bowls of the southwestern Adirondacks. Though all of the up-and-downs, we continue to build a heavy and dense snow pack. Hopefully, we’ll continue to build it through February and head into March with a glacier!

As the groomers continue to make their rounds, Tuesday’s new snow will be assimilated into the trail base and set us up really good for the weekend as it gradually turns colder. Snow is also in the forecast as well, with significant amounts possible from Moose River Plains into the western Adirondacks.

I know that some people are complaining about this winter. But at least for my neck of the woods, this winter has been light-years better than last winter for sure. I’ll keep racking up the miles while you sit on the couch. 😉
