Thursday’s weather system ended up being the little engine that could, with 3.5 inches of snow here in Indian Lake.
The new snow is certainly enough to freshen things up nicely for places like Perkins Clearing, Moose River Plains, Speculator Tree Farm and Powley Road.
As for the narrow woods trails around Indian Lake and Speculator, they are certainly do-able. You’ll need to exercise some caution for the usual early season water hazards.
UPDATE 12/23/16: Town of Indian Lake Parks and Rec are grooming the Indian Lake trails:
A WORD ON LAKES: You may see some pictures on social media showing how thick the ice is. But the smart play this early in the season would be to stay off the ice for now. I can tell you that Indian Lake is very high and the ice around shore may be compromised due to rising water levels.
Weekend Outlook:
With relatively light traffic expected for Christmas weekend, you could do surprisingly well. Snow pack is generally 6-12 inches for the central Adirondacks, then increases to over a foot in parts of the western Adirondacks.
Grooming is not in full swing yet in some areas. But I would say that terrain bumps and water hazards will be a bigger annoyance than studder bumps and moguls, especially for the narrow woods trails.
If you can break away from the holiday hub-bub, you’ll be rewarded with some pretty good early season riding this weekend, especially where the snowmobile riding is on seasonal roads.
You can check out trail reports on the ilsnow.com boards.
Unfortunately, we will experience a warm-up with rain later Monday into Monday night. But the duration and amount of rain shouldn’t be enough to wipe us out before temperatures cool back down through the 30s for Tuesday.
So, go out there and get it!
For the ilsnow nation,
Darrin
