Update 2/20/16: Indian Lake got an inch of new snow Friday night while Speculator picked up 2 inches.
Sorry for being a bit late with the weekend update. We have riding here, but you need to be smart about it and pick your spots like we’ve had all winter.
Perkins Clearing will be your best best this weekend, starting from the Mason Lake parking lot on Route 30. Moose River Plains from the Brown’s farm parking lot near the end of Cedar River Road is another option.
The lakes and roads desperately need snow cover and I think we’ll get that Friday night to grease the skids. That new snow could also provide a nice coating for the Indian Lake and Speculator local trails as well, which are currently bony and hard as a rock. But you still need to be smart, careful and patient for any trail you ride outside of the seasonal roads.
Yes, it will get mild this weekend and there are some rain in the forecast for Saturday. But that rain will be scattered showers and not the all-day soaker to make your life miserable.
Best advise is to hit the snow early Saturday to get whatever “good stuff” we have. We’ll just have to see what it will look like for Sunday. With a shallow snow pack, we don’t have much margin for error on the local trails.
Here’s a pic of some riders who found good stuff in the back of Perkins Clearing yesterday. Not too shabby I’d say…
By the way – The Snocade Kitty Cat Races are still ON at the Ski Hut for Saturday, February 20th starting at noon. Even if you don’t have a 5 to 12 year old child in the race, you can ride S85 to the Ski Hut and watch the next generation of riders have at it. 🙂
