We Got Snow! Update 1/13/16

Wilder Performance

The lake-effect and clipper system really came through for us. Indian Lake & Speculator have picked up 6-10 inches of snow this week.

Further west, through Moose River Plains into Inlet picked up a foot-plus.

We’ve made a remarkable recovery from Sunday’s hurt! And another clipper system will add some more to the pile on Thursday. 🙂

MIDWEEK RIDING:

The smartest plays are to hit Moose River Plains from the Brown’s Farm near the end of Cedar River Road. Or hit Perkins Clearing Road from the Mason Lake parking lot on Route 30. Powley Road would also be good call if you can find a suitable parking spot.

But this new snow does bring the narrow woods trails around Indian Lake and Speculator into play. Just keep in mind there is not enough base yet to fill up the terrain divots and completely pank over the rocks. It is the groomers’ call as to whether they want to risk using their equipment on the thin trail base.

You can monitor the ilsnow.com bulletin board for trail reports from local and visiting riders. No drama, no baloney sandwich, just good people who want to keep their fellow riders “in the know” about trail conditions.

Keep in mind that we’ve had strong winds this week that probably knocked down some trees. So do take it easy until the crews can clean up any mess.

NOTE ON LAKES: Please, STAY OFF THE ICE! Most of the lakes froze over January 4-5, which isn’t much more than a week ago. Some of the lakes even opened back up a bit after Sunday’s hurt. That fresh snow on the lakes makes them look nice, but it’s hiding dangerously thin ice.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK:

UPDATED 1/14/16

Saturday’s event appears to be a minor, with perhaps a couple inches of wet snow. Then we’ll pick up some lake-effect snow showers on Sunday. A clipper could give us a half-way decent burst of snow Sunday night before opening the Arctic floodgates for Monday. Not the big storm we need, but it certainly won’t do harm.

If you are new to snowmobiling the Indian Lake area, check out my snowmobiling guide. It’s a 101 Course on snowmobiling the central Adirondacks, filled with tips and advice that will help you enjoy this wonderful area even more.

As part of New York State Free Snowmobiling Weekend, the Towns of Webb & Inlet will not enforce their required Webb/Inlet Snowmobile Trail Permit between the hours of 4pm Friday and 12 midnight Monday.

Looks like this snowmobiling season is finally lifting off the runway.
