Winter, finally here! Update 12/19/15

Wilder Performance

UPDATE 12/20 AM: Indian Lake ended up with 2-3 inches of snow. Get reports of about a foot in Old Forge. I suspect that Moose River Plains got amounts in between. But with lake effect fluff on no-base, it’s your call as to whether you want to try it.

We have finally gotten our first true taste of winter here in ilsnow land this Saturday.

I’ve been posting so much on weather that some people might have forgotten that I’m running a snowmobiling website!

The snow has come so late that I don’t need to remind people of when hunting season ends and snowmobiling season begins on State land for northern Herkimer and Hamilton counties because that date passed at sunset December 6th!

As of 12:30 pm Saturday, Indian Lake village had an inch of snow. Places further south, like Speculator have done better, with at least a few inches of white stuff. In the western Adirondacks, Old Forge has already picked up at least several inches of snow. So far, very little snow has fallen north of Blue Mountain Lake.

You can check out a couple of webcam sites to get a good idea of the snowfall:

Weekend Outlook:

With the jackpot for heavy snow in the Tug Hill and its southern foothills, that’s where everyone will be flocking to. This shot of people riding the deep stuff in Boonville Saturday morning got plenty of attention:

Even with that much snow, you’re still going to encounter lots of early season hazards, not to mention the hoards of people desperate for a ride. So be careful out there!

As for ilsnow land, you can probably ride into Moose River Plains from the Inlet side by Sunday if you really want to. But I’m sure you’d be dredging rocks and clanking carbide with no base. It’s questionable as to whether there would be enough snow to hit Moose River Plains from Cedar River Road. There certainly isn’t enough snow at Indian Lake village to ride around:

Mid-week Outlook:

This wintry blast will depart quickly this week and be a distant memory before Christmas for the reasons I have outlined here.

Looking further ahead, I am starting to see signs of change for January. At this point, just about anything else would be better than what’s been going on thus far. I should have a full write up next week.

Chin up! I think better days are ahead. But we’ll need to be patient for a bit longer.

For the ilsnow nation,

Darrin
