This picture says a lot about the conditions we had in Tug Hill today!
Damion was watching the Tug Hill snow all week and got today off work. A bunch of us joined him for “Blow Off Work Day” at the Indian Lake Town Garage parking lot early this morning: Crazy Cal, Mattie, Dale, Jeff, Rob and myself. We joined Sledneck Don & Steve and his wife at the Timberview.
The field leaving Timberview was a bit choppy. But after we jetted down the road and into the woods, it got fun in a hurry! The seasonal roads ranged from smooth to some small rollers with lots of fresh powder on top. Off-trail snow cover was multiple feet deep! There was tons of snow dust flying around. Outside of a snowstorm, I’ve never seen that much snow dust while riding.
After Damion led us around some big loop around Montague with smooth sweetness, we ate lunch at the Montague Inn. There were lots of people in there and they had to open up the back room for us. Not only was the food good at a reasonable price, we had FREE entertainment watching a great stuck outside our window. Talk about dinner and a show!
After our meal and show, Damion led us to the Flat Rock Inn, the windmill fields and the Whetstone Gorge. As the afternoon wore on, the rollers were becoming more pronounced under the cumulative traffic which was greater than expected for a Thursday. I guess a lot of people had the same idea that we did.
After some more broad loops and passing Highmarket Sports, we went down to Constableville Nice-n-Easy for gas. The last mile or so down to the gas station was rough! Then Damion led us back up to Timberview so we could load the sleds back onto the trailers before nightfall. By the end of our ride, the trails were becoming a roller-rama. Temperatures got much colder by the second as the sun dropped toward the horizon.
It was a great day and probably one of the best group rides I’ve been on. It was a great crew of 10, for sure. Over 100 miles for the day. No mishaps, just a bunch of Indian Lakers having a great time taking the Tug by storm. I’ll sleep well tonight. 🙂
I don’t have a great knowledge of Tug Hill trails, so I can’t really give you a trail-by-trail, blow-by-blow. We were just following Damion the Tug Hill Tour Guide and having a blast all of the way. Assuming the area clubs groom it back up tonight, Friday should see a great start to the weekend out there.
