Trail Report 1/19/14 & Ride for the Cure

Wilder Performance

1/20 AM Update: Good news! Indian Lake got 2-3 inches of new snow overnight while Speculator got 3-4 inches. Judging by the webcams, the western Adirondacks picked up at least several inches of fresh snow.

Snow cover around Indian Lake & Speculator is generally 6-12 inches “in the woods.” Large open fields and southerly exposures hold less. There was a foot-plus of snow cover near the north end of Perkins Clearing Road.

Trail Report 1/19/14: Light snows through the weekend into Sunday evening have accumulated an inch or so around Indian Lake and Speculator with at least a few inches into the western Adirondacks. Additional snows will occur overnight with some further accumulation.

There were some tracks on the Indian Lake village trails. But believe me, you didn’t miss much if you skipped this weekend in terms of snowmobiling. The highlight of the weekend around here was Saturday’s Ice Fishing Derby on Lake Adirondack which was reported near capacity.

Down in Speculator, there are some rider and groomer reports on the ilsnow.com bulletin board. For sure, these are marginal conditions at best. But D.R.A.G of Speculator is doing their utmost to keep the trails ride-able within the village:

Midweek Outlook:

Can be summed up by one word: BRRRRR!!!! It will become bitterly cold and I would not be surprised to see a report of -30*F somewhere from ilsnow land early Wednesday morning. There may be an opportunity for snow on Thursday, then again on Saturday. Neither appears to be the major snow we desperately need, but direct hits by both would go a long way toward making things half way decent around here again.

Your best best to maximize any decent riding around here would be to hit the diehard havens like Perkins Clearing, Moose River Plains and Powley Road. The narrow woods trails surrounding Indian Lake and Speculator will have varying degrees of roughness with a thin base. Be on the constant alert for rocks or frozen washout hazards. The lakes could offer smooth riding for those willing to take the risk. The lake levels are starting to recede, so the shore ice on Indian Lake should firm up nicely this week.

Ride for the Cure:

The Pleasant Riders Snowmobile Club’s first annual Ride for the Cure is still ON for Saturday the 25th! So, we all need to do the snow dance. Don’t miss out on the festivities. You can still participate by car if needed. All proceeds collected will go to our local American Cancer Society chapter. Pre-registration on Friday the 24th will be at Oak Mountain Ski Center in Speculator from 5pm to 7pm. Breakfast buffet from 7am to 10am Saturday morning. Then dinner after the ride. Those who don’t ride can join us for dinner at $20 per person.

Sign up form and pledge sheet can be found here.

Pleasant Riders Snowmobile Club will update their snow conditions on their Facebook page this week.

Ohio Tavern Flat Drags:

Unfortunately, the Flat Drags scheduled for Sunday the 26th have already been cancelled due to lack of sufficient snow. Another Flat Drag may be scheduled for February.

Pray for snow. We’ve got a lot of winter to make up in the next two months!
