Much has happened around here in the past 24 hours: We got a quarter-inch of glaze ice Sunday evening, then temperatures shot up into the 40s overnight with a quick shot of heavy rain, then the cold came back with snow flying in the air.
It wasn’t a complete meltdown, but this did hurt our cause. All that beautiful powder on the lakes? Gone, melted and replaced with glace ice. The inner village trails around Speculator and Indian Lake are bony and rough again.
Remnant snow cover around Indian Lake village was 6-10 inches in protected spots, but thinner in exposed areas with some tufts of grass showing in wide open areas. The north end of Perkins Clearing Road still had a solid ice base with about a foot of snow cover off-trail. The Hamilton County Choppers Inlet cam was only showing a 3 inch snow cover behind the Ole Barn, so you can bet your bottom dollar there’s a lot of thin to bare stuff between Red River T and the Limekiln Gate in Moose River Plains.
MID-WEEK OUTLOOK:
A major lake effect snow event should bring Moose River Plains and Perkins Clearing back to life by Wednesday. Be sure to check webcams and first hand reports before coming up here. I doubt we’ll get enough snow to make the narrow woods trails around Indian Lake/Speculator worth much. Be sure to dress for survival because it will be bitterly and brutally cold up here!
WEEKEND OUTLOOK:
The chance of rain for Saturday makes the outlook sketchy. I’d recommend doing mid-week in the places that get nailed with the lake-effect stuff if you can. If we get lucky for Saturday with wet snow instead of rain, get up here this weekend because it looks even more sketchy next week. The temperature will be going up and down like MC Hammer with a bee in his pants. Unfortunately, I don’t see any immediate opportunities for meaningful snowfall after the present barrage of lake-effect snow barrage for the Western Adirondacks.
I wish I had better news, but there’s no getting off this weather carousel yet...
