Trail Report 12/23/13

Wilder Performance

As feared, the weekend thaw took most of our snow away. There was still about 2-3 inches of snow on my lawn at the ilsnow.com storm center this morning, but also some bald spots.

Technically, this will be recorded as a “White Christmas” here in Indian Lake, but it’s an ugly mixture of white, green and brown.

The narrow woods trails around Speculator and Indian Lake are essentially shot, bare in the open areas with some leftover icy base in the woods.

Perkins Clearing and Moose River Plains from Headquarters out to Big-T/Red River T still hold a serviceable base. But the Limekiln/Inlet end of Moose River Plains is probably completely shot.

MIDWEEK OUTLOOK:

The upcoming cold snap arriving Monday night will freeze whatever leftover snow we have into concrete. But until you hear from me or another reliable source, there isn’t anything around here that is worth trailering to from any distance to ride.

There could be a minor snow on Thursday followed by a shot of lake-effect snow Thursday night into Friday morning. That could bring places like Perkins Clearing and Moose River Plains back to life. But I wouldn’t hang my hat on that. It would be best to wait and see what the actual snowfall amounts are by Friday before heading up.

LONGER RANGE:

The outlook for early January looks excellent in regards to lake-effect snow, which would result in a rapid buildup of snow over the western Adirondacks. I don’t see any obvious candidates for a general snowstorm to bring things back to good for the entire ilsnow land yet, but something could always emerge out of the woodwork, like what happened December 14th-15th when we got pasted with 8-12+ inches of snow. More on that coming soon…

D.R.A.G. of Speculator did some roadside recon of their trails. I’ll leave you with their findings:
