This storm has delivered the goods! Reports as of 8PM Tuesday were in the 8-12 inch range for most of ilsnow land. Lake effect snows will add to the totals through Wednesday night, with significant amounts likely for the western Adirondacks. It has the look and feel of mid-winter out there!
Midweek and Weekend Snowmobiling Outlook:
The new snow should compel the groomers to come out for an encore. Until then, most trails will be bumpy under the new snow. Do be on the lookout for the stray deep washout on the trail. They can either divert the path of your snowmobile into a tree or cause your snowmobile to stop abruptly if you jam your ski into it. These hazards are particularly difficult to see at night. Trust me, it’s no fun to bop along at 20 MPH, then fly over your handlebars as your snowmobile goes from 20 to zero in less than a second. I’ve done that before.
I don’t want to make it sound like the trails are a mine field, but late winter run-off under the trails has began to eat away the remaining trail base from underneath. If you use a bit of caution, you’ll be fine.
The slush and standing water along the lake shores have frozen up, but I would still recommend not hanging around the shoreline any longer than you need to enter or exit lakes. Stay away from inlets and outlets.
Bottom line:
We’ve been pushed back into winter from the brink of die-hard season. The cold weather is going to hang around and make for a great late winter/early spring riding weekend. Get up here because we’re living on borrowed time, no matter how good it looks now. Have fun, be safe and never drink & ride!
Just to let you know, the Ole Barn is closed until Mother’s Day weekend as per their website.
