Snowmobiling Conditions: Update 2/27/13

Wilder Performance

To say the least, this has been an unusual storm. Snowfall reports in the Indian Lake/Speculator/Piseco corridor were mainly in the 6-8 inch range by 10PM this evening. That’s not the foot-plus that nearby western Warren County got, but it was much better than the light mixture of rain, sleet and snow that Old Forge, Inlet, Raquette Lake and Long Lake got all day. Even there, the rain has changed to snow with minor accumulations expected overnight into Thursday.

Through Friday, temperatures will reach into the 30s for highs and dip down into the 20s at night. This is not ideal for grooming, but the low mid-week, post-holiday traffic will allow the new snow to be “assimilated” into the base before this weekend. We can bemoan the big snows that barely alluded us, but the wet snow we got from this storm will help keep us going well further into March than we did last year.

Beware! With the snow starting to get deep and heavy on the lakes, slush is starting to become an issue.

Extended Snowmobiling Outlook:

The weather pattern for the next week or two should be an excellent thaw deterrent over ilsnow land, but can we get a big snow to carry us through March and get us into April? We’ll just have to wait and see on that. March is around the corner, so get up here and ride!
