Most places picked up a dusting to an inch of snow today, just enough to whiten the grubby/icy snow pack.
Just to let you know, we are not starting from Square One. There is still around a foot of remnant snow pack in the woods. The house was taken away by the Thaw but the foundation remains. It’s a lot easier to rebuild a house than it would be to start the foundation from scratch.
Heading into the weekend, snowmobiling conditions will be marginal. Your best bet would be to hit the seasonal roads like Moose River Plains, Powley Road and Perkins Clearing. Keep in mind that the north end of Perkins Clearing Road will be especially thin due to the previous early winter plowing/logging. The Inlet end of Moose River Plains usually gets pretty thin from Red River T to the Limekiln Road after a thaw.
Conditions will actually improve for snowmobiling over the weekend as we pick up snow, especially Saturday night into Sunday. I may take a ride before the weekend to scope out actual trail conditions.
NOTE ABOUT LAKES: With the heavy snow/slush stripped from the lakes, they will start making ice again. Keep in mind that ice thickness is far less than normal for mid-January. Riding on lakes is ALWAYS at your own risk, especially now. If you have doubts, STAY OFF! Being a live chicken is better than becoming a dead duck.
Bottom line: You can ride around here, but you need to be smart and careful about it.
