Darrin Jr and I wanted a do a little ride this afternoon. So did little Miss ilsnow.com, but she’s fighting a cold and had to stay home. For a Sunday afternoon, the inner village trails were not in that bad of shape. There were plenty of low, snirty shredder bumps. But that’s the stuff that can be fixed pretty quickly by the groomers once the weekend traffic subsides.
We ran the Sabael trail all the way over to Route 30. Aside from several mud holes you wouldn’t want to hit at speed, it was a pretty decent ride. It was groomed today and didn’t have much traffic on it because NOBODY had come up from Speculator via Indian Lake.

The short spur trail over to Benton Road was pretty rough. I saw several sleds coming from the Blue Mountain trail and could see from the beginning that trail would be rough, so we skipped that. 42nd and Broadway was a pretty nice ride past the old dump, but we didn’t go onto Lake Adirondack. Little Canada between Route 30 One Stop and Lone Birch was a nice ride. Ski Hut trail was good aside from a few water spots. After we had stopped for a bit of food at the One Stop, we hit the Sabael trail one more time to add a few more miles before calling it an afternoon. On the way home I got a hot chocolate for little Miss ilsnow.com, just like she made me promise before I left to ride.
I talked to some people who rode over to Indian Lake from the Ole Barn. They reported the Indian Lake side of Moose River Plains to be washboard bumps. Trail C8 from Adirondack Mountain Sports to Cedar River Headquarters was not bad for a weekend with just a few water spots.
Other stuff:
I did a little “drive by” reconnaissance down by Perkins Clearing Sunday morning. The north end of Perkins Clearing Road was somewhat snirty with shredder chop. The 2 Miles from Hell was well ridden and packed with low studders. Some people had crossed Lewey Lake, but nobody had ventured onto Indian Lake yet. Your best move would be to stay off Indian Lake until we can get a prolonged cold snap. There is TONS of gray slush on that lake with thin ice under it.
Midweek Outlook:
All in all, much of the weekend “damage” is stuff that can be repaired by the groomers before the January Thaw really hits later this week. Snow pack is presently 18-24 inches around Indian Lake and Speculator, with over 2 feet in Moose River Plains and the back side of Perkins Clearing. Next weekend is looking pretty ugly, so get your kicks this week if you can.
