Snowmobiling will be in full swing this weekend! Snow pack is at least 18-30 inches everywhere.
Indian Lake:
Village trails, C8 out to Headquarters and Moose River Plains have been groomed with good riding reported this week. The Blue Mountain Trail and Old Stage Trail was reported to be “horribly rough” as of Thursday evening. The cold weather and Friday’s snow should firm up the remaining mud holes nicely. As always, get here early for best results on a weekend.
Speculator:
Village trails and Perkins Clearing are being groomed. Use extreme caution on the “river trail.” Logging has reportedly ended in Perkins Clearing. However, logging remains a huge problem for snowmobiling in the Speculator Tree Farm. The cold weather and Friday’s snow should firm up the remaining mud holes nicely. As always, get here early for best results on a weekend.
Lakes:
It’s been cold lately. But keep in mind that December was very warm and the lakes barely froze over before we got all of the snow! Ice thicknesses are well below average for early January. Some people will try the ice this weekend, but you would be smart to stay off. Several snowmobiles have fallen through the ice in the Adirondacks this week.
Bottom Line:
Snowmobiling will be good in many places this weekend. The potential January Thaw for next week has some people worried about the rest of this winter. I’ve got a better idea: Instead of chasing the Ghost of Last Winter, Go out and have a blast this weekend, then let next week take care of itself.
