Looking at the storm this evening:
Notice the impressive swath of strong to severe thunderstorms from Alabama down to the Louisiana Delta. Back in the colder air, a snowstorm is progress over much of Arkansas. Put into layman’s terms: “This storm has some serious juice!”
Wednesday Night and Thursday:
Snow will spread into the Adirondacks Wednesday night, probably starting by 11PM around Indian Lake. Snowfall rates could reach multiple inches per hour during the pre-dawn hours Thursday morning as the storm becomes a classic coastal beast as shown here by the ECMWF model:
The storm will generate tremendously strong easterly winds at 850mb (roughly 1 mile above mean sea level) on Thursday:
When you have winds THAT strong blowing over hills and valleys, there will be major orographic effects on precipitation totals:
Notice the enhanced precipitation over the south/central and eastern Adirondacks and the pronounced “shadowing” in the Hudson Valley. There will be tremendous variation in snowfall across small areas, based on local terrain effects.
Bottom line:
I think most places in the south/central Adirondacks will get over a foot of snow from this storm. What a great way to kick the snowmobiling season into high gear! Can we finally agree this IS NOT LAST WINTER?! 🙂
