Winter is here! Update 11/24/12

Wilder Performance

The first true wintery blast of the season made it here today. Snow showers have accumulated 2-3 inches over the Western Adirondacks while I managed a nice little dusting at the ilsnow.com storm center at Indian Lake. Temperatures never made it out of the 20s this afternoon and strong, gusty winds made it feel much colder at times.

Next up?

NAM is showing some lake effect snow blowing through the Adirondacks Sunday night:

I don’t want to belabor what should be a relatively minor event, but places like Moose River Plains, Perkins Clearing and places further west could score several inches of fluff Sunday night into Monday morning. Don’t make plans to raid the early season hangouts yet, unless you want to scrape your carbides clean and risk getting shot at by angry hunters.

What about the Tuesday night/Wednesday Event?

At first blush, the Northern Hemispheric pattern looks favorable for a possibly significant snow event for the Adirondacks:

But most of the model ensembles are showing weak shortwave energy entering the east coast trough. I picked this GFS panel for Wednesday as an example:

GFS 500mb

In other words: Despite the favorable big picture set-up, we might not capitalize with a significant snow event here. But, if the models are presently underestimating the strength of the shortwave energy that will move to the east coast by Wednesday, this could go from “Game OFF” to “Game ON” pretty quick! At any rate, it will be cold and perhaps white for at least a week.
